2017 International Seminar on Trade Remedy of BRICS Countries Held in Beijing

On August 29, 2017 International Seminar on Trade Remedy of the BRICS Countries was held in Beijing. Vice Minister Wang Shouwen of MOFCOM delivered a keynote speech, and the heads from trade remedy agencies of the BRICS countries and the officials from the WTO Rules Division made speeches on specific issues.

Wang Shouwen pointed out that the BRICS countries had gone hand in hand and become an important engine for world economy. During this process, the exchanges and cooperation of trade remedy and research agencies of the BRICS countries expanded gradually, and the consensus such as supporting multilateral trade system and opposing multiform protectionism deepened constantly. At present, the globalization process faces unprecedented challenges, and all countries should strengthen communications and negotiations to build a trade remedy system that is beneficial to free trade and can deal with the international competition that the domestic industries face.

In order to further implement the consensus reached at the 7th Meeting of the BRICS Trade Ministers, Wang put forward three suggestions: 1. Uphold the spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation and protecting the common interests of the emerging markets and the developing countries. 2. Take concerted efforts to promote multilateral trade remedy rules and preserving the rule-based multilateral trade system. 3. Oppose trade protectionism and maintaining a transparent, fair and free trade environment.

It is the forth international seminar held by BRICS countries on trade remedy after the Beijing meeting in 2012. This seminar was hosted by MOFCOM Trade Remedy and the Investigation Bureau. The seminar provided a platform for the BRICS countries to deeply communicate and exchange views, to strengthen mutual understanding, trust and consensus, and to safeguard the BRICS countries’ common interests. It was a positive exploration to improve global economic governance.

Attending were over 120 representatives from the relevant departments of the State Council, the commercial departments at provincial and municipal levels, the related chambers of commerce and associations, the research agencies, experts, scholars, and lawyers.
